Art notes: WNEO/WEAO to air documentary on glass artist

By Dorothy Shinn
Beacon Journal art writer

At 7 p.m. Sunday, WNEO/WEAO (Channels 45/49) will showcase the work of renowned glass artist Paul Stankard in Paul Stankard Glass at the Akron Art Museum.

The documentary captures the essence of Stankard’s intricate paperweights and features a discussion with him about artistry. It also includes a visit to the museum at 1 S. High St. to view the world’s largest public collection of Stankard’s work.

Stankard has spent more than 40 years creating a body of work renowned for its artistic excellence, skillful technique and visual acuity. He combines nature, myth and beauty to create astonishingly realistic elements embedded in glass.

The museum received a gift of more than 60 pieces of Stankard’s glass paperweight art from Northeast Ohio residents Mike and Annie Belkin in 2011. The collection is on display as a permanent exhibit at the museum.

In the documentary, host Jody Miller interviews Stankard at his Mantua, N.J., home and studio about his life and career.
