Barley's Smokehouse & Brewpub in Columbus will tap a special beer on Valentine's Day honoring former Ohio State University football coach Woody Hayes, who was born on Feb. 14, 1913.

"We call it Woody Haze 100," owner Lenny Kolada said in an email. The beer is a Scottish export ale aged in a Woodford Reserve bourbon barrel. As the promotional materials say: "Unfiltered, like the man." The beer includes smoked malt and clocked in at 9.7 percent alcohol by volume before it was put in the barrels, Kolada said.

"The hints of smoke and toast in the Scottish export and the vanilla and fruit contributed by the freshly emptied Woodford Reserve bourbon barrel made for an ale that reminded me of a Highland Malt whisky in a way that beer never has before," brewer Angelo Signorino said.

Woody Haze is a limited release, as the brewpub has only 50 gallons. It will be tapped on one of the brewpub's beer engines on Valentine's Day and also will be available on two Firkin Fridays.

The legendary Hayes coached at Ohio State from 1951 to 1978. He compiled an overall coaching record of 238-72 (along with 10 ties). He died in 1987.
